I just finished Effigy and loved every minute of it.

I read an interview with the author, Theresa Danley, in which she said she did a ton of research for this book but had never actually been to the places where the story takes place. I can believe she did a lot of research but she did such a convincing job of turning that research into word-pictures that it's really difficult to believe she had never set foot in those places. Seriously, I was convinced beyond any doubt that she had spent a considerable amount of time at the various locales where the story takes place. Really a masterful job. And the story was GREAT! I loved the characters, the situations, the action scenes, the mystery, the suspense, the humor, the dialog... the whole works. As reading experiences go, Effigy was an absolute pleasure and more than worth the price of admission. This was a 5-out-of-5-star book for me.

I'm always looking for new authors and I thought this was an interesting first-work for a new author. Effigy offers good suspense, solid character development, and enchanting setting. At first, the quick switches of characters and locations was a bit irritating but as I got deeper into the story, the scenery changes made sense. The tale weaves ancient myth with modern-day technology that I found intriguing. I found the book a good read for a lazy afternoon and knowing the author is a bonus.
I couldn't put this book down! I loved the short chapters and the character development, which made it very easy to get swept away in the story. This book was very well researched and I applaud the author for supplying such great detail about archaeology. I really enjoyed the author's descriptions of scenery, weather and character facial expressions. =) For a first time author, she did very well! I can't wait for the next one!
I've known about Effigy since I first met Theresa Danley in an online critique group many years ago. I've seen this story change from what she first envisioned to the thrilling tale it is today. From the beginning, I was hooked into this story about an archaeology student working toward her dissertation and solving a mystery surrounding a valuable artifact found on her father's ranch. Theresa blends elements of science and a thriller well, taking the reader from a university in Utah to Mexico with expert ease. Her knowledge of the subject comes through well, and she has the reader hanging on until the last page.
Effigy, an exciting archeological thriller, takes the reader on a hair-raising journey from the US Southwest to ancient ruins in Mexico. Complete with a serial killer who mimics ancient Toltec and Aztec sacrifices, the theft of an important archeological relic that could be the key to solving the mystery, and a cast of shady characters, this is an adventure story that leaves you hanging util the very end. Theresa Danley has outdone herself in her accuracy and research into Mesoamerican and Native American history and culture. A must read for lovers of archeology and anthropology, Indian cultures of both North and South America, and a good adventure thriller.
