Jackpot! I've found another great author to add to my list of favorites! This is my first time reading Ruby Lionsdrake but it certainly won't be my last! I love, love, love romance and adore science fiction, but throw in a generous serving of pulse-pounding action, thrilling adventure along with a sprinkling of snarky humor and I'm in heaven! And Ruby Mandrake just delivered the perfect combination in Trial and Temptation, the second riveting release in her popular Mandrake Company series. Granted, I sorta started out of order by reading Book Two without realizing it was the second of the series but no problem, each of the books are full-length standalones and can be read in any order. However, I did race back to Amazon and picked up Mercenary Instinct, the first book of the series, so I can read it next and then resume reading them in chronological order. Trial and Temptation is an exciting, imaginative, fast-paced exceptionally well crafted, well written and well edited science fiction romp filled to the brim with action, adventure, danger, humor and romance. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with clearly defined his and her perspectives from the two protagonists, handsome mercenary Commander Gregor Thatcher and beautiful former freighter pilot and hopeful new mercenary, Valerian Calendula. Neither Gregor nor Val are your traditional hero or heroine but I fell head over heels for both. They were not your typical lovers either...you know...love at first sight...meeting and instantly falling into lust and love. In fact, these two unlikely lovers met ten years earlier when Val entered the Galactic Conglomeration as a cadet and Gregor was Lieutenant Commander Thatcher, her academy instructor....her very arrogant, pompous, know-it-all instructor. And apparently he hasn't changed a bit, so get ready for some fireworks with these two. They were the cutest couple ever and absolutely perfect together, playing off each other brilliantly. The entire dialogue was smart, sexy, at times funny, well executed and flowed effortlessly. I was immediately drawn into the story by the snark and attitude of the strong, sassy Val who was determined to secure a job as a mercenary in order to make enough money to bail her brother, Yarrow, out of trouble but was so afraid she might fail since her former academy nemesis, Commander Thatcher, would be the one to decide if she could pass muster and become a permanent employee of Mandrake Company. Val was an absolute delight and poor Gregor was far from your typical charismatic alpha male hero. Poor thing...he was totally clueless when it came to wooing a woman but I have to give him an A+ for effort. Once he set his mind to the task, and, of course, put it on his list, he's determined to win the heart of cadet Calendula. And yes, the brilliant Commander had a list for everything! lol.... No spoilers from me but I will say if you enjoy thrilling well-written science fiction loaded with danger, drama, action, adventure and steamy romance, then Trial and Temptation is most certainly the book for you.

Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! I was immediately drawn into the story and once I started, I couldn't stop. I read well into the wee hours of the morning; I simply had to discover, do they or don't they, and I was not disappointed! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since there are some steamy love scenes included. Will I read this author again? Abso-freakin-lutely! As a matter of fact, as soon as I finish this review, I intend to devour Book One, then hopefully pace myself on three other books in the series. And the most important question of all, was I entertained? Oh lawd, yes! Totally and completely entertained. I loved it! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read.

RL is an automatic buy for me. I seriously would probably read her grocery list as she is that good of a writer. Out of all the Mandrake books this one is my absolute favorite. I am a sucker for hot, alpha, kick-ass, military nerds. I just love them, and Thatcher is the epitome of awesomeness. in those departments. His social fumbling and awkwardness was off-set brilliantly by his no-nonsense military and high intelligence. He couldn't have been a better character. And Val? She was a sweet, curvy, kick-ass woman who was the perfect foil and fit for Gregor. Couples do not get any better!

RL writes relatable characters, interesting story lines, great editing, and smexy sex.Her writing is solid all the way around. All her books have been phenomenal, but this one just was my absolute favorite due to my hot nerd weakness. I sooo look forward to seeing more Mandrake Co books, and as far as I am concerned she can't write them fast enough!

I recently discovered Ms. Lionsdrake at the referral of another author and I am in love with her writing style and stories. The action is unbeatable and I really like the characters.

I especially loved Gregor and Val's story. What a marvelous job the author did to make the reader understand and sympathize with Gregor who is a genius and does not understand how other people think or communicate. Val is the perfect girl to hate him at first then learn to understand him.

I read a lot of books, and this is the first to tilt dive successfully into the psyche of what a person with a genius mind might be thinking.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
I Can't get enough of Lindsay Buroker aka Ruby Lionsdrake, I think I have read just about everything she's written under both pen names. She has a fantastic imagination and a genius mind for story telling. You can't help but fall in love with each and every character, they really come to life and you'll feel every emotion you can possibly have while reading
every story. I can truly say I have loved every book, story and novella that I have read by her. She also has an uncanny ability to keep it so exciting you can't put the books down and when you're done, you can't wait to read the next one. If you haven't read any of her work I highly recommend you do, it only takes one book to get hooked!
I can't tell you how much I love this series. It's Firefly meets Star Wars in the most delicious way possible. I'm always a bit nervous when I start a new series, and I instantly fall in love with the first book. There's always the chance that the second won't live up to my expectations. That's so not the case for the Mandrake series! I loved this second book just as much as the first.

Val is trying to pay back her brothers debts, and is basically interviewing for a combat pilot position with the Mandrake Company. The MC is a mercenary space crew, but they are the good guys. Think Firefly, all the way down to the leather duster jacket -) Gregor is the (to be honest I don't remember specifically what his position is, so I apologize!) for the MC. Gregor was Val's flight instructor back at the academy, and they did not get off on the right foot. Gregor is incredibly socially awkward, and ends up coming off like an arrogant SOB. In reality, he just can't speak to people. He always liked Val, but with his awkwardness he never told her, and she never got that he was interested. They get thrown together for a mission and end up reconnecting. Val finally starts to understand Gregor, yada yada yada.

There is a ton of action in this book, which I loved. I also really really really loved the back and forth between Val and Gregor. It cracked me up to no end, how he didn't understand her jokes, or when she was saying something dirty. There was a bit of dirty sexy time, which I love, but if that's not your thing you can easily skip over it without losing anything. I can't wait to read the next!
