Most likely, if you buying a Tenchi manga, it's because you're a Tenchi fan. Recapping the OAV anime series at the beginning was a waste of time and space. (And the fact that the original anime was nowhere near being completed at the time this manga series was started, well, it was forced to take the characters down its own particular timeline.)
Which is fine with me, because I always had a greater interest in watching these characters bounce off each other, as well as whatever immediate predicament they were facing, than worrying about where they were ultimately fated to end up.
As you see in the other reviews, this story has the gang dealing with a Ryoko double. Not a terribly original premise, but in the right hands, it could be milked for a lot of fun.
Okuda is talented enough to make the characters look and act right, but he shows a certain laziness in this volume by depicting the action scenes in too many frames as a bunch of abstract wavy lines. Something like what a little kid might draw in order to show a fight taking place. Add to this the fact that the story is not resolved within this volume leads to a feeling of undersatisfaction.
However, as Tenchi fans are resigned to the idea that they will be getting the successive volumes sooner or later, anyway, this will not trouble them too much. Since I fall into that same boat, I can only hope that this series improves in the volumes that follow.

No Need for Tenchi! Book 1 Hitoshi Okuda 9781569311806 Books Reviews

Tenchi Muyo! Unreal Genius is a very good graphic novel. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Very little down time between action sequences!! ^_^ Very good seller too! Exactly as pictured! Couldn't be happier! Will 100% but from and that seller again in the future!
)
This volume has the background in a short summary, which cover the OVA, and the first part of a two part story, the second part being in Volume Two Sword Play. The second volume also has two short stories. This first volume's artwork is great and the story allows all characters to shine, while at the same time allowing the plot to move along swiftly.
I've always like Tenchi Muyo. This is a basic alien meets earthling type of story, there's humor, action, and romance.
good copy of a classic has little wear or damage noticable good book
I ordered the first couple of these graphic novels because I was fond of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series. The comic picks up where the OVA left off (so, you might want to watch the OVA before you read them).
While some of the material may not be suitable for young children, it is very entertaining. Hitoshi Okuda strikes a perfect balance between action and humor. I'm looking forward to reading more.
My first introduction to the Tenchi universe were the several TV series. I decided to order the manga to see if it was as enjoyable. The "No Need For Tenchi" series has good artwork but rather than a plot, the writer seems to rely on action. Lots and lots of fights, but not a lot of story. If you want plot development, I recommend getting the "The All-New Tenchi Moyo" series instead.
