Jenny's newly established monster fighting business has hit a dry spell and a cold front is moving in startlingly fast. With the ice and snow comes something more destructive than anything Jenny and Marshal have faced so far.
Dark Prelude is my favorite installment yet. The action and gore hit you early in the story. There's less mystery and more adventure this time. I love the potential for this series to reshape the scary and not so scary things in the world. So far Jenny hasn't wavered in her resolve. If she's scared she just holds her tomahawk that much tighter. Maybe one day she'll take the wussy way out (can't imagine). There's no limit to where E.J. Wesley can take us with this series. And I have to mention Wesley's style of writing. With few words he takes me to Texas, this time to a blizzard that would have me snuggling under blankets sipping hot chocolate. His action scenes are thrilling, sometimes cringe-worthy. No doubt I spent the entire read curled over my computer not wanting it to end.

Dark Prelude Moonsongs 3 eBook EJ Wesley Reviews
Wow. This book made me feel so much. So much happens to Jenny in just 56 short pages. That poor girl has to make some hard calls. Some dark stuff goes down, but It was not a hard read by any means. It was just as gory as the previous books in the series, but nothing that is going to keep me up tonight. The bad guys and the good guys are not all cut and dry. I was reading some sections nervously just waiting for something terrible to happen. The suspense, man. The suspense. O.o
I got to read about even more characters, widening the Moonsong world just a little bit more than the previous book. There was action, suspense, and some crazy twists. A delightful addition to the first two novellas in the series.
"Dark Prelude" is a book whose title (I expect) sets the tone for things to come. A villain we met in an earlier book has done some nefarious things to a man that maybe had a reckoning of some kind coming, but he certainly didn't deserve what he got. And Jenny knows she is entirely responsible for this act of revenge.
There is a sense of doom being inside Jenny's skin, and that is perhaps the novella's greatest strength. It is a doom wherein we know tough choices will need to be made, that innocent people will die, and oftentimes it will be her that has to make that decision because no one else is suited to the task.
The book's unique glory is E.J. Wesley's paranormal writing, which succeeds in placing you on the edge of your seat through isolation, vivid metaphor, first person voice, and the use of the wide open vistas of Texas. It is here amidst a snowstorm in the woods that Jenny tracks down a monster.
Jenny has some close calls in "Dark Prelude." She only barely manages to escape with her life from a sheriff that just needs a single excuse to kill her in cold blood. It makes me wonder who are the real monsters? On the one hand we have a "human" man-killer. On the other we have a man-killer the likes no one has ever seen. Is one really better than the other?
"Dark Prelude" is violent, gory, and at times sad. But it is also filled with unique voices, features a healthy and fascinating LGBT couple, and provides a window into a paranormal world that's as exciting as it is dangerous.
I give this novella five stars out of five.
I loved, loved, loved this new book, I previously read Books 1 and 2, and enjoyed them so much I was anxiously waiting for Book 3 to come out and E.J. did not disappoint, he has such a unique style of writing, combining suspense, drama, and not to omit that quirky sense of humor thrown in that everyone loves and is noted by everyone that reads him. His writing is so unique that I believe a group of 10 could read 10 books by different authors on the same subject and you could pick out which one E.J. wrote and this is a great compliment,
I highly recommend this book to anyone -I would not limit this book to NA, although it for sure belongs there too, I believe all age groups that like fictional thrillers will enjoy this book and will read it more than once. I have! .
I continue to enjoy this series. Jenny is Anita Blake tough and edgy, not to mention snide and grumpy. She has a Grimm's knowledge and lineage and Eve Dallas' knack for finding trouble and corpses, along with her ingrained sense of justice and compassion. With a fluid and compelling writing style, Mr Wesley makes it easy to "willingly suspend disbelief" and get caught up in the Moonsong universe. Can't wait to read more in the series.
If you have not read Blood Fugue or Witches' Nocturne, stop right now and go read those first. Seriously. You don't want to miss out.
If you have and are trying to decide whether to plunk down some cash and read #3. You should. Period. Because you just won't believe this mess!
I read for pleasure, losing myself in the book and not usually worrying about "figuring things out." So I will admit I was a little disappointed when I "figured out" the first major plot wrinkle. However, I never saw the rest of it coming. This means that I'm anxiously waiting for the next installments to find out how EJ Wesley writes his way out this mess. Pick it up, read it. Then come sit by me and tap your foot with me until his next novella comes out. It's just that kind of reading.
Who we don't see at all in this episode, unfortunately. Again, the books are way too short for my taste. However, the premise is interesting, the main character is nicely presented, and it's written well.
This episode highlights the supporting character (the male best friend). I liked him, and the dialogue between the characters is natural. This story is a little morbid, similar to the first installment. I do wish that the Heroine had more powers or abilities--it's almost as if she's resigned to getting herself killed by some paranormal entity or another.
Not a bad series, but would be better if they were longer books.
